Rihanna Shares An Update On Her Next Album & Declines To Give Up A Release Date

The Navy recently spotted a new song titled “Private Loving” registered to BMI under her name. Rihanna sat down with Vogue for the fashion magazine’s November cover story. In the interview, the singer gave her latest update on the progress of her long-awaited ninth studio album, stating she needs more studio time to complete it while clarifying the project is more accurately described as “reggae-inspired.” As Rihanna previously revealed in Interview Magazine, the album is taking longer than usual because she has to balance music with her popular beauty, lingerie, and fashion lines. “I have been trying to get back into the studio,” she told Vogue. “It’s not like I can lock myself in for an extended amount of time, like I had the luxury of doing before. I know I have some very unhappy fans who don’t understand the inside bits of how it works.” She went on to describe the sound of the album. “I like to look at it as a reggae-inspired or reggae-infused album,” said Rihanna. “It’s not gonna be typical of what you know as reggae. But you’re going to feel the elements in all of the tracks.” The Bajan artist continued by explaining her special connection with the genre. “Reggae always feels right to me. It’s in my blood,” she said. “It doesn’t matter how far or long removed I am from that culture, or my environment that I grew up in; it never leaves… Even though I’ve explored other genres of music, it was time to go back to something that I haven’t really homed in on completely for a body of work.” When asked to share a release date, Rihanna was reluctant to stir up her passionate fanbase. “Oh my God, they’re gonna kill you for that!” she said, referring to the Rihanna Navy. “And they’re going to kill me more!” As Vogue pointed out, however, there are signs the album is inching toward completion. In August, the Navy spotted a new song titled “Private Loving” registered to performing rights organization BMI under her name:

Despite the pressure of having to juggle music with her other responsibilities, Rihanna told Vogue she will always make time for it. “Music is, like, speaking in code to the world, where they get it. It’s the weird language that connects me to them,” she explained. “Me the designer, me the woman who creates makeup and lingerie—it all started with music. It was my first pen pal-ship to the world. To cut that off is to cut my communication off.” In fact, the ANTI singer is already in the “discovery stage” for her 10th album. “We always went into the music this time around saying that we were going to do two different pieces of art,” she said. "One was gonna be inspired by the music that I grew up listening to. And one was gonna be the evolution of where I’m going next with music.” And she is also teased an upcoming collaboration with Lil Nas X, which “may not even be with music.” In late June, the two musicians posed together at the 2019 BET Awards:
